so hi im john buckheit im back with fire engineering for another training minutes in this series were covering chain link fences and in this particular one were looking at gates and and hinges and if youve been following our series uh prior to this we talked about padlocks we talked about chains and how to get them but there are times when maybe you want to go for the inside maybe you dont have the right tools you dont have a power saw maybe its a fuel spill or natural gas leak or something like that or maybe you want to be able to re-secure the area or its not really warranted the even even the light damage youre cutting this you might might opt to go for the hint side with a typical residential gate youre going to have a latching device similar to this if the person wants a little higher security theyre going to put a padlock through here but as youll see in a couple of minutes well demonstrate how you can get through that relatively easy with no damage on the inside of that typical residential light commercial youre just going to have a u-bolt with a collar its going to have a pin that pin nests in that keeper and this goes on one of those terminal posts and that affords the swinging action of that gate and well show you in a couple of minutes how you can get through that rather rather simply the next level up in terms of security and durability is this commercial style hinge which is like what we have here its the same type of setup we have the u-bolts securing the hardware to the terminal posts and we have a pin and the only difference is the pin is held in place with a cotter pin so the evolution is slightly longer you have to take pliers pull out the cotter pin and then you can drive one of these up and dismantle the gate from the inside the next common level up from that security that mechanism doesnt exist they rely on the rotation of this entire thing on the terminal post to operate the hinge so if were going to take this were going to have to take a deep socket socket wrench get in there unscrew these and then we can get in there and well show you that in a minute as well timmys coming up hes encountered a light commercial or a residential style gate hes determined it has a light padlock on it but he knows with this latching device that he doesnt even have to take that padlock its going to slow him down and its going to ruin that lock he can simply push on that terminal post that that latching device is on and that latching device will spin on that terminal post and he can get right in an alternate method instead of pushing on that that terminal post and getting that latching device to spin allow you in you can just bend that latching device prong theyre pretty weak you can bend it with his hand he can bend it with the tool its going to spread it and then he can pull that gate open and hes in when youre done the advantage with this you can bend it back into shape you can put it back together and the people have security again so if youre worried about re-establishing security this is another good method another quick and easy way with this type of gate you can go to the hinge side it has that simple pin hinge that we looked at before timmys just going to knock that upper hinge up hes going to then grab the gate lift it off the bottom hinge and open it up and then he goes and again an advantage you could re-secure this and the people have their security back with no damage we were discussing this higher security type of hinge where the entire mechanism rotates on that terminal post theres no way to lift this apart and get and get it apart but what you can do especially it may have been installed in properly where the nuts are actually on your side easy to attack with a socket set you want to get a deep disc socket set this might be 5 8 or 9 16 all the way up to three quarter inch timmys going to demonstrate now just how you could go about this this is really a very very strong fence its an expanded mesh but if it was chain link we could possibly pull it out of the way allow him to get inside there and operate loosen these nuts and get in there or he could also attack the nuts here that hold this part on that terminal post and we could get in that way in this situation theres a prime example a railroad where youd want to re-secure this when you were done you dont want to leave it open and then have someone go in there and get hurt theres been another training minutes thanks for watching well see you next time Training Minutes 2011: John Buckheit demonstrates how to force entry on the gate and hinge sides of chain-link fences. These videos are for training demonstration purposes only. When you perform these techniques at emergency scenes and evolutions, be sure to wear full PPE and adhere to your agencys procedures and policies.
